The beauty benefit of teeth cleaning is secondary tteeth bacteriao disease prevention and health promotion.
How lucky am I? As a hygienist my job is to help people be healthy and beautiful.
Dental hygiene care can be most important care your mouth and your body will receive. It’s just as important as going to your doctor if not more. It will ensure the foundation of your mouth is healthy and that your teeth and the bacteria on them are not contributing to poor overall health or worsening other health conditions.

Teeth cleaning is about better health and overall systemic wellness. Without a healthy mouth you cannot be truly healthy. Everything we need to live comes through our mouth. Food, air, water… If your mouth is not disease free neither are you. Most of us want to be healthy. But mouth care somehow gets left out. It is an integral part in good health and long life. Even if you don’t have teeth you have bacteria. Oh yes! If you haven’t had professional mouth care including teeth cleaning or debridement, the teeth, tongue and even the gums can be hiding all kinds of nasty organisms. These bugs are what cause inflammation or swelling of your gums, tooth decay, and bad breath. You’ve heard of  gum disease or gingivitis right? It’s what causes bleeding gums and eventually tooth loss. If your gums bleed you have disease! This is not ok. Bleeding gums are an indication that you need care. You need to see a dental hygienist for treatment. Inflammation is not healthy or normal. Google it! It can contribute to a myriad of systemic health conditions. Diabetes, heart disease, premature birth, arthritis, cancer the list goes on.

The Low Down On Teeth Whitening-Is Whitening Bad for You?

stress free dental care

Just The Facts About Teeth Whitening

bright white smile

bright white smile

Everyone asks me if whitening is bad for you. Some have tried over the counter products with little or no success. But most are interested in whiter brighter teeth. But they don’t know how it works. They might be frightened by myths and misinformation. Or maybe they think they can’t afford it. Well I’m going to tell you that almost everyone can whiten their teeth safely and effectively.

Few people know the facts. Teeth come in shades of yellow and gray. That’s a fact. Nobody’s teeth are paper white…unless they’ve had expensive dental work. Click here to see celebrities who’ve spent money at a cosmetic dentist. Or have you heard of photoshop? Yes some people are blessed with very light teeth while others have darker teeth. Luck of the draw folks.

Should you whiten? That’s a good question. Are you happy with your teeth? If the answer is no then you should at least explore your options. The smile is an integral part of our self image. Someone said “A smile is your calling card…”it’s so true. Let’s address a few commonly asked questions first.

Does whitening cause sensitivity? It can but not always. Older systems and over-the-counter (OTC) products tend to cause more sensitivity. The newer more natural professional whitening products are much better. They contain ingredients designed to remineralize and soothe the teeth and tissues during and after the whitening process. Ask me about Spa Dent!

Is whitening dangerous? Not if it’s done correctly! If you have healthy teeth and it’s a product from a reputable source you should be good to go. If you have questions about the safety of a product consult with a dental professional. Believe it or not that’s what we are here for. As a resource for the public.

Do OTC products work? Absolutely they can. Make sure you follow instructions and don’t over use the product. Questions refer to point one…dental professional.

Do DIY products work? That I can’t speak to with all certainty. I have seen countless blogs and articles and websites dedicated to do it yourself whitening. They use charcoal, tumeric, coconut oil, baking soda…I could go on. In my experience all of these things can be useful to remove surface stains. Most are abrasives and should not be over used. Similar to when your hygienist polishes your teeth. Can they remove instrinsic or internal stain in enamel? I think not.

If you are ever tempted to use household bleach or peroxide on your teeth…look at the label. That is not an invitation to take internally.

poison

Can teeth be too white? I think so. But that’s just my opinion. I think everyone has different ideas of what looks good on themselves and they should be free to pursue what they wish.

too white

What are the differences between professional and OTC products? Most over the counter products like toothpastes and rinses are either abrasive, like sandpaper or use peroxide. Let’s address these separately.

  1. Abrasives like whitening toothpastes with are helpful for surface stains. But using an abrasive on your teeth for long term will roughen and thin the enamel with time. That’s not a good thing. Rough enamel stains more readily and thin enamel causes sensitivity and yellowing. Remember Pearl Drops? If you don’t I bet your parents do.
  2. Rinses or gels over the counter (OTC)  that contain peroxide have a very limited effect. For a product that contains peroxide to be safe to come in contact with tissues it needs to be a very low percentage. The lower the percentage the smaller the effect.
whitening-trays

Professional products again have many different forms. In general, most professional products are much stronger than OTC products. They have also come a long way since we first started using them. We can use stronger percentages because the application process is very controlled and safe. The client either wears a custom tray made for their unique dentition or a qualified clinician applies the product. The product does not come in contact with tissues.

FYI. Some things to keep in mind if you want to whiten your teeth.

  • Teeth that aren’t clean will not whiten well. Before any whitening OTC or professional takes place any plaque, calculus or stain needs to be removed. Have your teeth cleaned by your hygienist. I’ve had many clients that after their teeth were cleaned and polished no longer felt they needed to whiten. Yay!
  • You should avoid doing things that promote stain while you are whitening. Smoking, coffee, tea, red wine… yes most of the fun things should be avoided if you want good results.
  • If you have decay or broken teeth do not use whitening products. All I have to say is…ouch! Teeth need to be healthy and intact. DENTAL PROFESSIONAL please!
  • All teeth respond differently to whitening. Some lighten dramatically and others, especially those that are already light, brighten more subtly.

My final thoughts. Healthy is more important than white. Don’t miss your regular dental cleanings and do your homework. But if you are not happy with the color of your teeth call me or come in for a consultation. Everyone has unique needs and without knowing your individual situation I don’t know what those are. Whitening consultations are complimentary and I can help! Cleaning and whitening teeth are my specialty:) Jen

Let us help prevent cavities with sealants..

Pit and Fissure Sealants Protect Teeth from Decay

Dental sealants have been applied by dental hygienists for years to protect erupting adult teeth. At Embrace Dental Hygiene we highly recommend placement of sealants on healthy six and twelve year molars. These vulnerable teeth are hard to reach for kids and their caregivers and commonly become decayed. These adult teeth will be in place from about six years of age until… well hopefully forever. A timely placed pit and fissure sealant will help keep the tooth healthy until adulthood. We want to prevent potentially painful and costly procedures.

A dental sealant is designed to fill the deep grooves of the biting surface of a tooth preventing plaque bacteria from sticking and causing decay. A six year old child is often not capable of cleaning these teeth effectively making them high risk for decay.

At Embrace Dental Hygiene in Amherstburg we use Embrace Pit and Fissure Sealant material. We chose this material because it is BPA free and fluoride releasing. Let me help prevent tooth decay! Contact me now to discuss sealant placement for your child!

Whether you are 1 or 101 you need professional mouth care. Mouth health=overall health. Just because you don’t have pain doesn’t mean you don’t have dental problems. One of the most dangerous things about oral disease and decay is that there are often no symptoms in the early stages. Oral cancer too often can be deadly only because ouchit isn’t diagnosed in time. Catching disease or decay early is key. This is when it may be reversible or easily treated. There are usually only noticeable symptoms when you have big issues that may involve complex and expensive treatment. Don’t wait.

Did you know  that more than 75% of the population has gum disease, or that decay is the third most common childhood illness. And that both of these conditions are 99% preventable. Cancer Treatment and Oral Health

Cancer Treatment and How to Prepare Your Mouth

Have you or someone you know been diagnosed with cancer? Are you preparing for treatment? Did you knhealth professional cancerow that prior to undergoing cancer therapy or treatment it is imperative to have your oral health assessed by a professional. Gingivitis, periodontal disease, decay, poor fitting dentures or appliances, or sores in your mouth all require treatment prior to having cancer treatment. A thorough dental cleaning should also be a part of that preparation. There are many treatments and products that we can provide or recommend to help you manage the issues that may occur during and after cancer therapy. Products like xylitol, fluoride and biotene are helpful for managing the various dental concerns that are caused by radiation and/or chemotherapy. Nutritional guidance may also be valuable. Call us at 519-736-1100 or contact us to help you prepare.

Why? Because chemotherapy and/or radiation greatly increases your risk of disease and decay. Existing conditions that are now minor irritations or have no symptoms can bloom into severe concerns at a time when you can least manage them. Having dental pain or infection during cancer therapy can reduce your ability to withstand treatment. Both chemotherapy and radiation can cause taste alterations and dysphagia or difficulty swallowing. Making eating and drinking difficult and creating more dental plaque. You may not feel capable during treatment of your oral hygiene routines. This again makes preparation and prevention necessary. At least a month prior to starting treatment speak to your dental professional about your diagnosis and treatment plan any needed care. We will consult with you and your physicians and will know how to help you before, during and after therapy.

Head and neck radiation therapy can damage the salivary glands, teeth and tissues drastically depending on the field irradiated. Potentially causing issues for the rest of your life. Damage to the salivary glands results in xerostomia or dry mouth. This condition greatly increases your risk for disease and decay. Saliva moisturizes the tissues, contains the minerals necessary for remineralization and assists in clearing and metabolizing food. Some clients may need to have custom trays fabricated for application of remineralizing products during therapy to prevent demineralization and decay and reduce tooth hypersensitivity. Radiation can also cause a painful oral condition called mucositis. This inflammation of the oral tissues can turn normal everyday activities like eating brushing and flossing into a nightmare. The teeth can become hypersensitive. These issues can be so painful that your cancer treatment may need to be stopped or delayed. There are ways to manage these conditions but if your oral health is at it’s best your chances of undergoing therapy with fewer problems are much improved. Radiation therapy also puts you at risk for osteoradionecrosis. The risk for this condition is highest the first year following treatment. So any care that can be completed prior to your treatment should be.

Chemotherapy greatly increases your risk for infection and decreases your immune response. This can cause even low grade inflammation like that involved in gingivitis or periodontal disease to bloom into a severe or acute problem. Oral mucositis can also be caused by chemotherapy. Again, this makes oral hygiene and potentially eating and drinking difficult. So preparing by contacting your dental professional prior to commencement of treatment is so important. It may be unsafe to proceed with dental treatment for many weeks after your treatment is completed. Your dental professional will consult with your oncologist or medical doctor to ensure that it is safe to proceed with oral care. We want to help you ensure that no oral issues will occur that may interfere or lengthen the time your require cancer treatment.

Contact us at Embrace Dental Hygiene for advice professionalor an appointment. Oral health and systemic health are one in the same. Your dental hygienist is a part of your circle of care and we are dedicated to helping you manage and improve your health.

Oral Care for Seniors

Oral health care is vital for seniors
(NC)—Statistics Canada estimates seniors represent the fastest growing segment of
the Canadian population, a segment expected to reach 9.2 million by 2041. As more
Canadians age, proper preventive healthcare, including oral health, becomes
increasingly important. Today, most seniors can expect to keep most, if not all, their
natural teeth and this fact makes it especially essential to maintain regular oral
hygiene habits and visits to a dental professional.
The Canadian Health Measure Survey says 53% of adults aged 60 to 79 do not have dental insurance, and the lack of
coverage is one of the main reasons why Canadians don’t see a dental professional. Since older adults have specific dental needs, seniors and their caretakers should be aware of the importance of regular dental care. Bacteria from your mouth can travel and develop into serious infections affecting your overall health, specialists say. Many medications can cause dry mouth, a condition that can contribute to cavities and other oral problems. Seniors also develop more cavities on the roots of their teeth than younger adults.
So whether you’re at home or in a long-term care residence, regular treatments by a dental hygienist can help prevent more serious health problems. Together, you can plan a daily oral care routine that will keep your teeth, and you, healthy for life.
